Americans Are Divided; New Research Indicates How We Can Come Together
Kurt Gray: I’m using the Decision Point Method to ask people — from students to everyday workers to members of Congress — what they would do in the “hot seat” of a political dilemma. How would you deal with the unequal impact of COVID-19 across the nation? How would you deal with a staffer who disagrees with the boss’ position but promises to uphold the position as a Cabinet secretary? By thinking through these political — but non-partisan — scenarios, people gain insights into how elected officials and political opponents see the world instead of just focusing on partisan disagreements. My research expands what’s already emerging in academic literature — that focusing on how people think instead of what they think, we may increase feelings of understanding toward political opponents without compromising core values.
