How We Can Be

Tim Crane: FMRI technology does not solve the mind-body problem; if anything, it only brings it more clearly into relief. So how should we go about addressing the philosophical question, the “hard problem” of consciousness? We are torn between two equally unattractive options: either that there is nothing to us at all but a collection of neurons and their properties; or that there is some immaterial, spiritual thing which is distinct from the matter that makes us up. Neither of these views is true; the truth must lie somewhere in the middle. But where?
